NEW YORK, NY – Award-winning Screenwriter, Executive, Filmmaker and Producer James Schamus will be honored with this year’s “Bingham Ray Spirit Award” at ShowEast. Schamus will be presented with this special honor as a part of the Final Night Awards Ceremony hosted by the Coca-Cola Company on Thursday, October 20 at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach.
The Bingham Ray Spirit Award was established in 2012 in honor of the late Bingham Ray, one of the most beloved people in the independent film world. Each year, the award is bestowed up an individual who has shown exemplary foresight and creativity in the world of independent film.
“It is with great pleasure that ShowEast will honor James Schamus with the Bingham Ray Spirit Award,” stated Andrew Sunshine, Vice President of The Film Expo Group. “In the world of independent film, there are very few who are more knowledgeable and passionate about film than James. We congratulate James on this very well deserved honor.”
“In the course of the first half of my career, Bingham Ray was many things to me – role model, mentor, business partner, and, later, friend, but even then he was already one constant: a true man of the cinema. It’s beyond an honor to be receiving this award,” said James Schamus.
Schamus is the former CEO of Focus Features, the motion picture production, financing, and worldwide distribution company whose films have included Moonrise Kingdom, Milk, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Kids are All Right, The Pianist, Coraline, and The Dallas Buyers Club. Schamus is also a screenwriter and producer and is known for his work on The Ice Storm and Brokeback Mountain. Schamus’s feature directorial debut is an adaptation of Philip Roth’s Indignation, starring Logan Lerman, Sarah Gadon and Tracy Letts, which premiered at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival and the Berlin Film Festival. Roadside Attractions will release Indignation on July 29, 2016. Schamus also recently directed the short documentary That Film About Money.
Schamus is a Professor of Professional Practice in Columbia University’s School of the Arts, where he teaches film history and theory. Additionally, Schamus is the author of Carl Theodor Dreyer’s Gertrud: The Moving Word, published by the University of Washington Press. Schamus earned his BA, MA, and Ph.D. in English from the University of California, Berkeley.
ShowEast will celebrate its 30th anniversary from October 17-20, 2016 at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach in Miami, Florida. The convention will attract an estimated 1,300 domestic and Latin American motion picture industry professionals and will feature product presentations and screenings of major upcoming films, exclusive sponsored events, exciting and informative seminars, and the “ShowEast EXPO.”
